FICTION CLARITY
Take hours off your self-editing process with this unique tool for authors.
This Microsoft Word add-in will search your document for filtering words and phrases (like 'saw', 'heard', 'wondered', 'felt' and others) and clutter words (like 'just', 'very', 'be able to' and others) and change their font colour. It comes with a file of 250+ words and phrases, but you can add or remove any you want. It will find all instances of these in a 66,000-word novel in about 40 seconds, and then you can easily spot those pesky words during your next edit! |
What are filtering words?Filtering words are those that create a distance between the reader and the character by telling the reader what the character is experiencing instead of showing them the experience directly from the character’s viewpoint.
For example, in the following sentence, the reader is told what is happening for the character: I saw the old man walk toward me. It could be written this way without the filtering, which allows the reader to experience the action through the viewpoint of the character without telling them what it is. The old man walked toward me. |
How does Fiction Clarity help?See this example paragraph:
I wondered if I would see Belinda in the office today after the things I heard her saying yesterday. I don’t think it’s a good idea for her to show up again. Fiction Clarity would change it to this (with the default filter file): I wondered if I would see Belinda in the office today after the things I heard her saying yesterday. I don’t think it’s a good idea for her to show up again. Seeing this, you might reword the paragraph like this: Would Belinda come to the office today? Surely not after the terrible things she said yesterday. |
What does Fiction Clarity look for, exactly?Fiction Clarity comes with a predefined file of 250+ filtering and clutter words and phrases, but you can edit this file for your own preferences. The more words and phrases there are in a filter file, the longer Fiction Clarity will take to process it.
You can remove any words and phrases that you don’t want to check for. You can add as many words and phrases as you want. For instance, if you overuse eye rolling, you could add ‘rolled his eyes’, ‘rolled her eyes’ and 'eyes rolled' to the list. You can have multiple filter files, perhaps one for fiction and one for non-fiction. You can have one for UK English and one for US English. They are simple text files, easily edited in Notepad or Word. |
But I can search for those words myself...Sure. It’ll take you a while, though. You can search for one at a time with Ctrl-F. This highlights all instances of the word you’re searching for, but those highlights disappear when you make an edit. Alternatively, you can look for them during your editing pass, but it's easy to miss lots of them, and editing like that takes longer.
Is Fiction Clarity fast?Yes. On my computer, it processes the 250+ words and phrases from the filter file and changes the font colour for all instances of each in a 66,000-word novel in about 40 seconds. (It may be a little faster or slower on your computer).
Windows or Mac?Fiction Clarity works on Word for Microsoft Windows only.
